Types of Childcare

Types of childcare

Many families, when they are looking for help with their childcare, are not always sure exactly what sort of help they require. Holly’s House has put together the following to try to help you obtain a better understanding of the range of childcare options available within your home.

Nanny
This is someone who takes sole care of your child in your home. They will have obtained an acknowledged qualification and / or have an appropriate level of experience. Their main concern will be for the safety and care of your child, however many are willing to help with light household duties relating to your child. These duties may include the child’s laundry, meal preparation and general tidying up after the child.

A nanny will play an important role in the bringing up and development of your child and therefore will install discipline and manners as well as entertaining, comforting and loving them. A nanny will gain valued respect from your child.

A nanny can be employed on a full time, part time, permanent or temporary basis and can be live in or daily.

You can expect to pay a full time nanny between £250 and £350 net per week. A nannies hourly rate can be between £6 & £9 net per hour.

Mother’s Help
This is someone who may have just qualified from his or her childcare studies or is not yet qualified in childcare. They will have limited childcare experience. They will normally work alongside one of the parents giving an extra pair of hands and will help with light housework such as children’s laundry and cooking.

A mother’s help can also be employed on a full time, part time, permanent or temporary basis and can be live in or daily.

You can expect to pay a full time mother’s help between £180 and £280 net per week. A mother’s help hourly rate can be between £5.00 & £7.00 net per hour.

Nanny Share
This is where a nanny will look after the children from two families. It is a cheaper alternative to a nanny, as the two families would split the cost of the nannies salary. The nanny will either look after the children in one of the family’s homes or split the time between the two. Alternatively a nanny share may be a situation where two families only require a part time nanny and therefore the nanny will divide her time between the two families. A nanny share can only be carried out between the children of two families otherwise the nanny must be registered with OFSTED as a childminder.

Nanny Housekeeper
A nanny housekeeper is usually employed if the children are at school or in full time nursery. The nanny housekeeper will manage all household duties including cooking, laundry, light housework and grocery shopping. When the children return home their main responsibility will be for the care of the children.

You can expect to pay a full time nanny housekeeper between £270 and £400 net per week. A nanny housekeeper’s hourly rate can be between £7 & £10 net per hour.

Maternity Nurse
This is usually someone who is fully qualified and has extensive experience with newborn babies. They are usually employed on a short-term, temporary basis to help a new mother settle into motherhood. They will live in and will normally be available 24 hours a day 6 days a week. They will help and advise the new mother with all aspects of caring for her baby and help to develop a stable routine for both the mother and child.

You can expect to pay a maternity nurse between £300 and £400 net per week. A maternity nurse’s hourly rate can be between £8 & £12 per hour.

Babysitter
This is someone who looks after your children for a short period during an evening whilst you go out. They do not necessary work within childcare during the day but do have childcare experience. Their only responsibility is for the care and safety of your children.
